He was awarded a Bachelor of Business Administration
degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1979 and then
received his first Master of Science degree in Natural
Resource policy from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor
in 1981. In that same year he began his legal studies at the
Marquette University Law School where he spent two years
on the Marquette University Law Review including one year
as a staff editor, publishing on environmental law at 67
Marq. L. Rev. 691 (1984).
Mr. Kelly returned to the classroom in 2000 to next earn his
fourth university degree – this one being a Master’s degree in Theological Studies from Ave Maria University. Mr. Kelly graduated at the top of his MTS class.
One of his class assignments – a piece on the spiritual classic The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis – had
been published in the August-September, 2002 edition of Homiletic and Pastoral Review. Mr. Kelly’s appreciation
for this spiritual classic is noted at several places in his book Cleansing Fire.
After 22 years of practicing law with a prominent Wisconsin law firm, in 2006 Mr. Kelly started his own solo law
practice. He opened his office in a building he and a friend constructed near his rural home located just northeast
of Monroe. He runs his law practice and writes on theological topics besides the large windows overlooking his
farm of 170 acres of rolling land, prairie flowers and wildlife.
